Astral Boy and Dream Girl is the second segment of the fifth episode of the second season and the thirty-first overall episode of the Pucca television series. It first aired on April 21, 2008.
Synopsis[]
Garu astral projects out of his body to seek ultimate enlightenment from the Original Ninja Kami. Pucca assists him in his journey.
Plot[]
In Ssoso's Peace Out Palace, Garu and Abyo are meditating so that they can separates their spirits into the astral plain and speak to the original ninja kami. Abyo is bit too fidgety for their task but Garu does reach deep enough to separate himself. Pucca, who was watching the practice with Ching, runs in to kiss him but is disappointed when she gets no response from his spiritless body.
Garu's consciousness has escaped into the air and while at first disorientating, he uses this weightless form to fly through the astral plane. He arrives upon the temple where the Original Ninja Kami and his associates live, though he's shocked to discover the kami gets all of his information from his duck-walking stick. Speaking for the stick's quacks, the kami declares he can give Garu what he wants -- the secret of ultimate enlightenment -- only if he can complete tasks to prove he is worthy.
The first of the tasks is to collect a "speedy rock from the sky" -- meaning a comet -- in just five minutes. He taps the ninja with the stick and he's teleported out into space, right in the path of several comets. He is confident in his task but quickly discovers he can’t grab one in his astral projection form, though they hurt as they go right through him.
Back in Sooga Village, Pucca is moping as she sits with Ching in the Goh-Rong but can hear Garu's grunts of pain even at that distance. Deciding to help him, she uses her chopsticks to rip a hole in reality and head to his location, an act that greatly startles Ching and Won (who lays several eggs as a result).
Pucca joins Garu in the astral plane and effortlessly catches all of the mini comets before they can hit him. A much bigger comet is coming their way, though, so Pucca goes to meet it with a powerful kick. Garu is surprised when she presents him the leftovers of the comet, chiseled into a heart, but it's at that point the five minute timer is up. Garu and the comet are teleported away, leaving Pucca behind to her sadness.
Garu appears before the Original Ninja Kami, offering the ice heart for which he is praised. He now must complete his next task: using a pair of sacred underpants (pink shorts with a heart on it), he must humiliate the astral rhino and bring back his tears. The ninja is transported right to the rhino who is peacefully grazing. Using the underpants like a matador's cape, he goads the beast into charging though its size intimidates him until he starts sweating.
Pucca and Ching are jumping rope until the echo of Garu's fear reaches the delivery girl. Using her jump rope, she skips so fast that she teleports into the astral plane right beside of him. Pucca is so glad to see Garu, she inadvertently stands in the path of the charging rhino and doesn’t move when it crashes into her, stunned. Garu takes this as his chance and uses the sacred underpants to give the rhino a wedgie. The beast is so humiliated by this, it cries single tear which Garu collects into a glass vial. His task is complete and though Pucca also tries to charge at him, he is again teleported away when time has run out. Now she's just annoyed.
Garu presents the tear to the Ninja Kami who, impressed with this success, gives the final task: enter Muji's mind and find his greatest fear.
Garu heads to Muji's lair where the man is asleep, and makes his way into his mind. After sifting through the many mustache-related thoughts, Garu locates Muji's greatest fear: a barber shop. Inside, he watches Muji's nightmare of sitting before a barber who goes too far and shaves him completely bald. The shock of this wakes Muji in real life but after seeing it was just a dream, he returns to sleep. The barber, done with Muji, sets his hair-clipping gaze on Garu with intentions to "trim up" his pigtails.
His screams of terror reach Pucca, currently picking clovers with Ching. The noodle girl opens a dimensional window and, seeing him cornered by the barber, she too enters Muji's mind. The barber sends his razor at her but she grabs the cord and throws it right back. The hair-clipping fiend is quickly restrained by his own shaver while Garu's timer runs out.
This time, Garu, Pucca, and the barber are all brought before the Ninja Kami who laughs at Muji's greatest fear. Still, since Garu has completed all the tasks, the ducky decides he can now learn the secret to ultimate enlightenment. The ninja boy is thrilled but just before the kami can tell him the secret, the barber gets loose from his bonds. After seeing the Kamis with their long hair, he sets his clippers on them instead.
Garu isn't very interested in their plight, though, because the Ninja Kami drops the all-knowing duck staff which Garu picks up. Too bad for him, he can’t translate the duck's quacks so the secret to ultimate enlightenment is lost to him. He does find one thing to be happy about: in this astral form, Pucca cannot land a kiss on him no matter how hard she tries. So for Garu, this was all worthwhile.
